    Similarities and Differences between Depression and Anxiety

    Depression and anxiety are both mental disorders. At the same time, both of them are critical and give you an extremely hard time dealing with them.     Depression is a mental disorder that is related to mood swings. Many people claim that they are depressed when they are only sad or down at times, but this is actually a normal part of being human. However, a person can be identified as having depression or experiencing a Major Depressive Episode if there is a significant decrease in mood or interest in activities that he or she once enjoyed.

    What Is Anxiety?

    If you have an anxiety disorder, you are going to experience panic, fear, or anxiety in situations where most people would not feel threatened or anxious. It is believed to be caused in part by a malfunction of brain chemistry; general anxiety is not the normal trepidation that one feels before taking a test or awaiting the outcome of a biopsy. Moreover, the victim may experience rapid panic or anxiety attacks without any recognized trigger and often lives with constant nagging anxiousness or worry.

    What Are the Differences between Depression and Anxiety?

    Now, anxiety and depression are in dissimilar classes of mental health disorders. Where depression is a mood disorder; but anxiety is its own class of conditions. However, the Statistical Manual and Diagnostic of Mental Disorders, 5th edition differentiates anxiety and depression by listing each as a distinct classification of mental conditions. Furthermore, there are many types of anxiety disorders, for example, generalized anxiety, specific phobia, and social anxiety. Additionally, there are also different types of depression-related conditions, which include seasonal depression, major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder.

    Let’s check another difference between depression and anxiety is their definitions. Depression is a mood disorder considered by despondency and overwhelming sadness. And, anxiety is irresistible stress or worry related to the apparent predictability that a contrary event or outcome will occur.

    Differences in Symptoms

    If we compare the signs of anxiety with depression symptoms, we will get it is one way to differentiate the disorders. Now, the symptoms of anxiety include:

    • Inability to concentrate.
    • Rumination or obsessive thought patterns.
    • Panic attacks.
    • Changes in appetite.

    Similarities in Symptoms

    There are some exact symptoms more linked with anxiety than depression and vice versa. Now, many symptoms are predominant for both illnesses, such as:

    • Inability to concentrate.
    • Changes in sleep or appetite.
    • Loss of interest in hobbies or other activities.
