Steps in making asphalt driveway
Demolition and removing surface
Before the process of making the driveway starts, there must be demolition and removal of the surface. Whether they made the former road of concrete or asphalt, everything has to be removed using heavy machines like forklifts and small bob cuts, and if need be, they will use larger machines like front loader and larger dump trucks. During the demolition, they remove any vegetation and debris.

Grade and sloping
They later use automatic motor graders to grade and flatten the surface until they get the desired gradient, and it’s done in a way that water will flow off to the sides. They do the curved grading to allow proper drainage and keep the driveway free from potholes and cracks that will damage the road quickly.
In countries with winter, the contractor adds a frost protection layer that prevents the asphalt driveway from frost heave damage.
Sub-base layer is a course of granular aggregates that the contractor lays under the base course meant to increase the driveway load-bearing capacity, thus increasing its performance and strength. The sub-base could be laid up to 100mm if the subgrade was weak.
Base course preparation
After the application of the subbase, what follows is an aggregate material layer that is referred to as the base course. It is native soil that is improved and compacted; primarily, the contractors use a load-bearing layer from the driveway.
A 1,361 kg twin drum roller should compact the sub-base to remove air and water to create a denser driveway that can bear the high load. Then the subbase should be covered with road base mix, which should be rough and jagged.
They lay the binder course between a 50 to 100mm layer of aggregate mixed with bitumen. Its purpose is to withstand shears’ stresses below the asphalt driveway. The layer should be left to settle for a week to make it more robust and durable.
Installing a surface course
After placing the road base firmly, hot asphalt is poured on the binder course and then pressed with a steam roller to ensure no aggregate bump remains on the surface. When the asphalt cools, it becomes solid to support vehicles, but it is advisable to let it cure for three months before becoming functional.
